After Ashley’s post on preparing your pet for a disaster, unfortunately Hurricane Gustav is heading right for New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. I am hopeful that both people and pets will be able to evacuate and that those who do not or can not fair better than last time. However, I am also doubtful since so little has been done to improve the infrastructure or repair the levees.
After Hurricane Katrina, there were so many horrible images that many of us were scarred by, including those of neglected and left behind pets.
As the Gulf Coast prepares, hopefully the Humane Society of the United States is ramping up their own efforts and today, I did all that I could in Massachusetts by donating directly to their disaster relief fund. You can set up a monthly gift to be automatically debited or you can gift a one time gift. All are tax deductible and as someone who worked at a nonprofit Every Single Gift Of ANY Amount Helps!
And, after viewing these slideshows, how can you not?

Aside from the Humane Society of the United States, there are thousands of local reputable shelters that also need donations in their efforts to rescued displaced animals. Make sure you check with the Better Business Bureau before donating money to any organization!
