We all know accidents happen, and we should be prepared, but what happens when your cat is injured? Though it is vital to always contact a vet in medical emergencies, first aid kits are important to have on hand for minor injuries. From the book “Essential Cat: The Ultimate Guide to Caring for Your Cat”, I will list the important items to have in any kitty first-aid kit. All of the following can be bought from your local vet, drugstore and/or pet store. Always remember to use safe handling practices when aiding a cat. This includes washing your hands and wearing gloves.
Absorbent paper towels, alcohol, antihistamines, antiseptic lotion and wound powder, bandages, blunt tipped tweezers, cotton swabs and balls, curved blunt-tipped scissors, Elizabethan collar (e-collar), glucose powder, heavy duty protective gloves, pen-light and battery, petroleum jelly, small stainless steel or plastic bowls, space blanket or large sheet of plastic bubble wrap, squares of clean cotton material, sterile eye wash, sticky surgical tape, surgical gloves, syringe or eye dropped, table salt, thermometer and clean towels are all necessary for any kitty first-aid kit.
As I mentioned before, no first aid kit is a substitute for real vet care and if you have any questions, please contact your local vet before attempting to help a sick and/or injured cat.
