As part of the ongoing series on the history of cats at Take Care of Your Cat, I will be profiling a few famous cats and kittens.
CC, which stands for “Copycat,” was the world’s first cloned cat. Although cloned animals share the same DNA, it is used differently in each cat. Therefore cloned cats can have different markings and personalities. They are not necessarily identical.
She was born in 2001 at Texas A&M, where she was cloned. The project was funded by Genetic Savings & Clone, a company that offered to clone your favorite pet. Dead or Alive. Later on in 2006 CC had a litter of “naturally fathered” kittens just as Genetic Savings & Clone went out of business.
CC lives with and is taken care of by one of the veterinary medicine professors at Texas A&M who participated in cloning her.
